In today´s business world, the rules are always changing. As a business owner, you can go from having a competitive advantage to being thrown back to square one once new technology enters the marketplace. The motivation tools that worked yesterday may be irrelevant today if the values of your employees change.
Some people have an innate ability for being able to adapt to the changing tides before they happen. They create a strategy that maybe absurd to many at first, but become visionary when recognized as successful. They are known as trendsetters.
SETTING THE TRENDS
There are five abilities that create the attributes of a trendsetter:
Visionary Consciousness;
Multicultural Responsiveness;
Intuitive Sensitivity;
Risk-Taking Confidence;
Self-Awareness.
Visionary Consciousness
These skills rise from a strong sense of values and integrity, usually through some kind of painful experience or loss. As a result, trendsetters become committed to helping other people who may be going through similar kinds of experiences. Generally, trendsetters have gone through a major personal or career change that requires them to develop new skills that weren’t needed before. They integrate a wealth of unrelated ideas and skills.
Multicultural Responsiveness
Trendsetters are bilingual in the way they can understand the eccentricities of different worlds and cultures. They spread across traditional boundaries and act as translators, knowing how to pick up on subtle cues that are different from their own. They will pay fine attention to people different from themselves. They will have a genuine and open curiosity about people from other cultures to see what the similarities are.
Intuitive Sensitivity
Integrating information from many different sources and looking for underlying themes and patterns are elements that trendsetters also do. This is in part from being avid readers. They’ve learned over time to pay attention to subtle signs of potential changes. They have a knack for making the right decisions, taking action of something that seems counterintuitive to others. These intuitive skills are gained through listening deeply to others, looking out for coincidences and patterns that will help them make decisions.
Risk-Taking Confidence
A strong sense of adventure and experimentation is always present. Trendsetters are attracted to the next big thing. They’re able to walk in the two worlds of practicality and creativity, where the risks they take are based on information and intuition. Having a clear vision guided by strong values helps them take the risks that others won’t.
Self-Awareness
The most important element out of the five that make up a trendsetter, they know that each person is microcosm of the whole. Therefore, they’re aware that others are experimenting with a vision as they do; and seek to find those people that have the same passion to work together and make a difference.
